This shot, from Birdland in 1954, was taken just prior to the formation of the first incarnation of the Jazz Messengers. By this time Horace Silver had established himself as a composer and an arranger, but it would be almost three more years before the release of 6 Pieces of Silver, his first classic quintet record for Blue Note.
